Introduction
Unresolved military images or videos of unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) do not by themselves prove that the United States possesses alien technology, operates a secret reverse-engineering programme or is concealing extraterrestrial spacecraft. What they can prove is much narrower: that, in some cases, military personnel recorded something that could not be confidently identified using the information available at the time.
This distinction matters in discussions surrounding US military secrecy and claims associated with figures such as Gary McKinnon. Military organisations routinely collect sensor data under operational conditions rather than scientific ones. Why some military imagery remains unidentified
Military aircraft, drones and surveillance platforms carry sophisticated sensors, but those sensors are designed primarily for tactical missions, not for establishing the identity of distant objects beyond doubt.
Several factors commonly prevent a definitive conclusion:
- Infrared cameras record heat signatures rather than conventional photographs.
- Released footage is often heavily compressed or cropped to protect classified sensor capabilities.
- Important contextual information—such as radar tracks, aircraft position, targeting data, weather conditions or intelligence reporting—may remain unavailable.
- Many publicly released clips are only a few seconds long, making accurate reconstruction difficult.
- Without observations from multiple independent sensors, analysts cannot reliably estimate distance, size, speed or acceleration.

How limited data restrict confident conclusions
An unidentified image may demonstrate that something was detected, but it usually cannot establish what that object was.
A single infrared recording often cannot answer basic questions such as:
- How far away was the object?
- How large was it?
- Was it moving rapidly, or did camera motion create that impression?
- Was the apparent shape produced by the object itself or by the imaging system?
- Was the sensor observing a physical object, an atmospheric effect or an imaging artefact?
Without reliable answers to these questions, claims about propulsion systems, extraordinary manoeuvres or non-human technology remain unsupported by the imagery alone.
This is why scientific investigations distinguish between insufficient evidence and evidence for an extraordinary hypothesis. What official unresolved cases actually show
Recent public releases from the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) illustrate this principle.
For example, AARO has published several unresolved infrared videos from military platforms. In some cases, the office concludes with high confidence that a physical object was present, yet also states that its observed behaviour is unremarkable or that available information is insufficient to determine exactly what the object was. These assessments are notable because they separate two different questions:
- Was something detected? Sometimes yes.
- Can its identity or origin be established? Sometimes no.
An unresolved classification therefore reflects incomplete evidence rather than confirmation of an exotic explanation.
The Navy videos and what they do—and do not—demonstrate
The best-known military UAP recordings are the FLIR (often called FLIR1), Gimbal and GoFast videos recorded by US Navy aircraft.
These clips became famous because trained military aviators considered the objects unusual, and because the Department of Defense confirmed that the videos were authentic military recordings. However, authenticity of the footage is different from confirmation of an extraordinary object.
Over time, several competing interpretations have emerged:
- Some researchers argue that camera geometry, infrared imaging characteristics or parallax explain much of the apparent unusual motion.
- Others maintain that the released footage lacks enough information to reach a definitive identification.
- Officially, some of these cases have remained unresolved because available evidence has not allowed a conclusive attribution.
Importantly, neither official uncertainty nor alternative technical explanations demonstrate alien technology. Where uncertainty ends and unsupported claims begin
The strongest justified conclusions from unresolved military imagery are relatively modest:
- Military personnel sometimes record events they cannot immediately identify.
- Some recordings contain genuine physical objects whose precise identity remains unknown.
- Existing public data may be inadequate for confident scientific analysis.
- Better instrumentation and more complete sensor records would improve future investigations.
The evidence does not, by itself, justify stronger conclusions such as:
- that the object originated beyond Earth;
- that it used physics unknown to science;
- that the US military possesses recovered alien craft;
- that unresolved footage confirms a hidden reverse-engineering programme.
Moving from “unidentified” to “extraterrestrial” requires additional evidence that the released imagery does not provide.
What this means for claims of military UFO secrecy
Within debates about US military secrecy, unresolved UAP imagery is often cited as indirect evidence that classified programmes conceal extraordinary discoveries. The available evidence supports a more limited conclusion.
Military organisations unquestionably withhold information about sensor capabilities, intelligence sources and classified operations. That secrecy can reduce the amount of contextual information released alongside UAP videos, making some cases impossible for outside observers to resolve. However, the existence of classified military information does not establish that the hidden material concerns non-human technology rather than ordinary defence capabilities.
