However, despite years of public discussion, no authenticated copy of the image, screenshot, NASA catalogue entry or independent witness has ever emerged.
This distinction is crucial. McKinnon’s account is a first-person recollection rather than verifiable documentary evidence. His Description of the Object
McKinnon has consistently described the image in similar terms across multiple interviews over many years.
According to his account, he had gained remote access to a computer within what he believed was a NASA photographic department at Johnson Space Center. He stated that one image eventually rendered on his screen and showed:
- Earth’s curved horizon occupying much of the frame.
- A smooth metallic object suspended above Earth.
- A generally cigar-shaped main body.
- Geodesic or golf-ball-like domes positioned around the object.
- No visible rivets, seams or obvious propulsion systems.
- No accompanying caption, scale, mission identifier or explanatory metadata.

Importantly, he has never claimed that the image explicitly identified the object as extraterrestrial. His interpretation was based entirely on its appearance and the context in which he believed he found it.
Why No Image Was Ever Preserved
One of the strongest limitations on evaluating McKinnon’s claim is that the image itself no longer exists outside his memory.
He explained that he was using a 56 kbps dial-up internet connection together with remote desktop software. Instead, he attempted to open the image remotely on the NASA computer while reducing the display to:
- very low screen resolution;
- 4-bit colour;
- heavily compressed remote desktop graphics.
According to McKinnon, the picture gradually appeared on the remote screen before NASA personnel noticed the unauthorised connection and disconnected him. Consequently:
- there is no original file;
- no cached image;
- no recovered metadata;
- no independent forensic examination.
Everything known about the photograph derives from McKinnon’s later descriptions.
How Reliable Would Such a View Have Been?
Even if McKinnon accurately recalls seeing an unusual image, the circumstances under which he viewed it significantly limit what can be concluded.
Several technical factors reduce confidence in visual interpretation:
- Extremely low image quality. Four-bit colour allows only sixteen colours or shades, dramatically reducing visual detail.
- Remote desktop compression. Early remote administration software updated images slowly and often produced artefacts while rendering.
- Partial loading. McKinnon has said the image appeared gradually before the connection was interrupted.

These limitations mean that even a genuine satellite photograph of an ordinary spacecraft could potentially appear unfamiliar when viewed briefly under degraded conditions.
Conventional Explanations That Have Been Suggested
Because the image is unavailable, investigators cannot compare it with known NASA imagery or determine what mission produced it. Several conventional possibilities have therefore been proposed.
One possibility is that the object was an orbital spacecraft unfamiliar to McKinnon. NASA and its contractors have operated or photographed numerous satellites, upper rocket stages, experimental hardware and components whose appearance can differ markedly from popular expectations.
Another possibility is that the object was a partially rendered or corrupted image. Early remote desktop software frequently displayed incomplete geometry, missing textures and blocky artefacts while transmitting large files over slow connections.
It is also possible that McKinnon viewed a close-up photograph of spacecraft hardware during assembly, servicing or testing, rather than a free-flying object in orbit. Without the associated metadata or surrounding image sequence, visual context is easily lost.
None of these explanations can be confirmed because the underlying file has never been identified. Equally, none can be ruled out.
Why the Claim Cannot Be Verified
The evidential weakness of the alleged NASA image stems from the complete absence of corroborating material.
No publicly available evidence has established:
- the filename;
- the catalogue number;
- the mission that produced it;
- the date it was captured;
- the instrument or camera used;

At the same time, the consistency of McKinnon’s description over many years explains why the story continues to attract attention among UFO researchers.
From an evidence-based perspective, however, the image cannot currently be treated as proof of extraterrestrial spacecraft, secret space programmes or deliberate NASA concealment. It remains an unverified recollection whose interpretation depends almost entirely on accepting McKinnon’s memory in the absence of independently examinable evidence.
