One significant limitation is that the ship names themselves have never been produced. No screenshot, transcript or contemporaneous notes survive. Why the Naval Vessel Register is not a complete test

The assumption that every legitimate naval vessel should appear in a public register oversimplifies how military and maritime records work.

The US Naval Vessel Register is the official inventory of US Navy ships and service craft, but it is designed to track vessels that belong within that specific administrative system. It is not a catalogue of every vessel operated by every branch of the US government, every allied navy, every contractor-operated platform or every historical designation. Even if a name genuinely failed to appear in the Naval Vessel Register, that alone would not establish that it referred to a spacecraft. A missing match could instead reflect:

  • a vessel operated by another military branch or government organisation;
  • a contractor, research or support platform;

Conventional explanations for unmatched entries

Several ordinary explanations fit the available evidence at least as well as the spacecraft hypothesis.

Internal naming conventions. Military organisations routinely use abbreviations, programme names, hull numbers and administrative identifiers that differ from the names visible in public sources. A personnel spreadsheet may record organisational identifiers rather than ceremonial vessel names.

Temporary or project designations. Exercises, acquisition programmes, logistics systems and planning documents often employ working titles that never become public ship names. If McKinnon viewed an internal administrative workbook, its terminology may not have been intended for public reference.

Incomplete recollection. McKinnon viewed the material over a slow remote connection more than two decades ago and was unable to preserve the document before losing access. Search limitations in the early 2000s. Public online naval resources were substantially less comprehensive when McKinnon carried out his own searches than they are today. Failing to locate a name through ordinary internet searching in 2001 or 2002 is not equivalent to proving that no conventional explanation existed.

Why “unknown” is not the same as “non-terrestrial”

The logical gap in the argument is an example of reasoning from absence rather than positive evidence.

The sequence often presented is:

  1. McKinnon saw unfamiliar ship names.
  2. He could not find them in public sources.
  3. Therefore they were spacecraft.

Only the first point depends on McKinnon’s testimony. The third does not logically follow from the second. An unsuccessful search narrows neither the category nor the location of the object being searched for. It simply establishes that the search did not identify a match using the information available at the time.

In historical research, unexplained records frequently acquire mundane explanations once additional documentation becomes available. Conversely, extraordinary claims require evidence stronger than an absence from public databases. What this means for assessing the spreadsheet

Within the broader “Non-Terrestrial Officers” narrative, the unknown ship names remain one of its most intriguing but least verifiable elements. They depend entirely on McKinnon’s memory because neither the spreadsheet nor the names themselves are available for independent analysis.

As a result, the evidence supports only a limited conclusion: McKinnon believed he had seen vessel names that he could not identify through ordinary public searches. It does not establish that the vessels were spacecraft, nor does it eliminate conventional explanations such as internal administrative terminology, temporary project names, foreign vessels, abbreviations or imperfect recollection.
